Otago Senior Badminton: Plan for Year 2015 – Important Information

Hi everyone,

Here is some information regarding 2015 Otago senior (open age) badminton and the plan for this year. This includes info on training times, team selection, and tournament dates.

Player training Monday March 16 and March 23. 6.30-8pm. Anyone welcome to attend, $10 per player per night, cash to be paid on the night. Coaches and selectors for both senior teams are Jim and Leo.

Brooke Cup – Sat March 28, Invercargill, day trip. Friendly game against Southland 1. 4-5 woman and 4-5 men travel. We will organise who this is on March 23, volunteer/self-selection or lucky dip if a lot of people are interested, playing in this will not influence Otago rep selection.

Player training Monday April 13 and April 20 6.30-8pm. Anyone welcome to attend, $10 per night.

Week of April 20 – Otago 1 and Otago 2 rep teams selected.

April 27, May 4, June 8, 15, 29, July 6, 13, 6.30-8pm (7 training sessions). Only Otago 1 and Otago 2 rep teams can attend, FREE for these players.

If we make the NZ Div 3 final, then July 27, Aug 10, 17, 24, 6.30-8pm (4 training sessions). Only Otago 1, FREE for these players.

To be selected in the Otago 1 or Otago 2 rep team, you MUST be able to commit to the following events –

Saturday May 9th, Div 3 south island teams event, day event (either in Invercargill or Dunedin).

Saturday July 18th, Div 3 south island teams event, likely in Christchurch, travel on Friday afternoon, stay Friday night in Christchurch. Players fund their own accommodation and share of car pool petrol. Likely to be around $40 for accom (shared motel unit), and petrol depends on driver and style (?!)

Only for Otago 1, Neill Cup, Christchurch, Sat Aug 2. Again travel on the Friday, pay for your own accom and petrol costs.

Only for Otago 1, div 3 final if win the south island competition, Sat Aug 29, if we’re in it will be played in Dunedin (yay!)

Once selected in the squad you must attend all the Monday training sessions, unless otherwise agreed by the coaches.

You must play (or at least be on the reserve list for) an A grade interclub team. Dates still to be confirmed, it will only be held during University lecture/term time, and it will be on a Wednesday night starting 7pm. Last year this was a 6 week block May to mid June, and then a second block mid July to mid Aug. In the weeks that interclub is not on we may run another training session Wednesday night instead, this is tba.

To play for Otago you must be affiliated to the OBA through a club. If you need any information on this then please email me via zn.gro.ogatonotnimdabnull@reciffo-ved or have a look at the clubs on the OBA website.

During the year there will be opportunities to help with fundraising activities to cover/subsidise player travel costs.

Please email me via zn.gro.ogatonotnimdabnull@reciffo-ved if you intend on coming along to the Monday sessions in March, and pass this email on to others that may be interested in rep baddy this year.

Thanks,

Andrea Vernall

Neill Cup in Dunedin

Neill Cup weekend in Dunedin

The Otago Senior Team 1 competed in the Neill Cup over the weekend. This competition is a 3 way round robin with the top Canterbury and Southland Teams. Given that Southland and Canterbury are currently playing in Division 1 and 2 respectively, it was going to be a tough weekend! Our team comprised Elaine, Alex Lubransky, Monica, Sarah, Priyal, Luke, Jake, James, Kamil and Dan Cleminson.

We played Southland on Friday night and went into the match quietly confident. We started the tie very well winning 7 out of 8 singles. Luke drew the short straw and had to play the old master Nic Raines and despite playing a great match , youth wasn’t able to overcome age and experience! Our good form continued into the doubles, where we took 3 out of 4 matches. There were some extremely close games in mixed with each team taking 2 matches. The stand out performance in mixed was Luke (helped out a little by Elaine) who got revenge by beating Nic Raines and Hannah Wilson – great result for a singles specialist!

So onto the Canterbury game. Unfortunately, this time the result didn’t go our way. The Canterbury team are outstanding and thoroughly deserved their 12-4 win. However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Kamil and James continued their great run of form in singles and won their ties comfortably in 2 sets. Priyal played an outstanding game of singles and was unlucky to lose in 3 sets to Ella Vuleta-Dick. Jake and Luke continued their unbeaten run in mens doubles and Kamil and Priyal also remain unbeaten in the mixed doubles.

Overall we were happy with how we played against the standard of opposition that we will face against Waikato 2. We are heads down, bums up, hard out training for the next month!!

A big thank-you to Elaine for taking the time to write this up!

Otago Team 1 wins Div 3

Here are the results from last weekend’s Division 3 competition in Christchurch:

Otago 1 came in top and will vie with the North Island top for Div 3 and the winner will get to be promoted to Slazenger Cup in 2015.

The Otago Senior Team 1 competed in the remaining Division 3 pool matches in Christchurch on Saturday 26th July. The team comprised Elaine Hargreaves, Philippa Buzzard, Monica Xiong, Sarah Sandford, Priyal Patel, Luke White, Jake Dickson, James Swan, Kamil Priyal and Nathan Pitcher.

Otago team 1
We had an extremely successful day on court! Starting with a narrow win over Canterbury 2, winning 9-7. It’s fair to say our boys really stepped up in performance and pulled us through with some fantastic badminton. They won all their singles in 2 sets and took one of the mens doubles. The girls had a tougher time, losing all their singles but Elaine and Monica came through to take the top doubles in 3 sets. We knew we had strong mixed pairings and were confident of sealing the win. In the end we took 3 out of the 4 mixed.

Stand out efforts in the mixed were Kamil and Priyal, and Nathan and Philippa winning easily in 2 sets. Overall it was a great team effort!

In the afternoon we played Nelson and we were expecting as tough a game as we usually have with them. We put ourselves in a strong position after the singles, winning 3 out of 4 mens singles and 2 of the girls singles (well done Sarah and Priyal!). Philippa and Elaine ended up on the wrong end of tough 3 setters. Again the boys played outstanding badminton in the mens doubles to take both matches. The stand out game was between Kamil/ James and Cam Lubransky/ Ed Shuttleworth and turned into a game of nerves with our boys taking the match 22-20, 20-22, 21-23! Another outstanding performance by Kamil/ Priyal and Nathan /Philippa in the mixed, sealed the match for us 10-6.
So we came away from the weekend as winners of the South Island Division 3. We will play Waikato 2 in September to try and win promotion to the Slazenger Cup – keep your fingers crossed for us!

A big thank-you to Elaine for taking the time to write this up!

Otago 2, consisting of Natasha Kolimlim, Karmilla Jaafar, Maddy Doran, Kelsi Wallace, Mike Tran, Ah-Lek Tay, Nang Lee, and Joseph Hii had a tough battle and a very long day.

  • Otago 2 vs Canterbury 3.  Result was the closest it could get with Otago 2 tied on matches evenly with Canterbury 3 with 8 won each. Otago 2 was edged out by a shortfall of 3 sets!  Result: Otago 2 vs Canterbury 3: 8-8 matches with 18-21 sets.
  • Otago 2 vs Marlborough result 5-11. Our players put up a fight till the last match with ending just before 7pm.

Round 1 Division 3 Results

Just bringing you up to speed with what’s been happening in Division 3, where we’ve got two teams this season.

The first tie, Otago 1 vs. Otago 2 took place in Dunedin on Friday, June 13, and the second ties against Southland 2 and South Canterbury 2 in Invercargill the next day. There was a rugby game in town, so finding accommodation for any potential visitors would have been tricky!

Otago 2 results

Lots of first timers in team 2 which is great to see! Age was not a factor, with the age range in the team spanning some forty years. The following playing one, two or all three ties of the weekend:

Mike Tran, Ryan Eggers (Invercargill), Ferdinand Kolimlim (Dunedin), Joseph Hii, Nang Lee

Karmilla Jaafar, Nicole Kellett, Maddy Doran, Tara Clark (Dunedin), Adithi Alexander (Invercargill)

The first tie went 16-0 to Otago 1  …. by design, so to speak.

We lost to Southland 2 1-15 … with some very tight and exciting matches to three sets.

Both the youngest in the team, Adithi, 13 and the oldest, Nang, 54 came close to securing a point in their singles against a strong Southland team. Adithi battled for three sets against Ella Smith, winning the first one 21-13. In another three set battle, Nang won the first set 21-18, then lost 21-16 and 23-21.

Against South Canterbury, Otago 2 did well, winning 13-3.

Otago Open results

Congratulations to all the winners of the Otago Open! Here are the results.

In other news around the Otago Open 2014 … it’s been a great success with nearly twice as many entries as last year. Some stats for those interested:

  • 58 players across all events
  • 24 men in singles
  • 13 women in singles
  • 16 mens doubles pairs
  • 11 women doubles pairs
  • 18 mixed doubles pairs
  • 135 matches played
  • more than 8500 points in about 250 games played over about 3800 minutes time (63 hours)

A huge thank you to Suzanne and Anne – total pros at organizing and running these events.

The canteen run by Junior parents was a huge success as well, both as a fundraising exercise and by providing a great atmosphere and nourishment for players. It’s a good sign when people umpire with a toastie in one hand!

Thanks to everyone who traveled to be part of the Otago Open this year. Players from Auckland, Wellington, and Waitakere as well as Nelson, Canterbury, Lincoln and Southland joined us. See you next year!

Match play for A grade – have your say today!

Jeff, the coaches, and some senior players have been discussing the pros and cons of a separate matchplay night for senior rep players and have come up with the following proposal:

Let’s run a five team competition, consisting of 2 men and 2 ladies in each team on a Wednesday night or weekend day, starting next week.

We currently have approximately 14 ladies and 16 blokes on file, with hopefully university players joining in. This format gives each team a bye and gives the organisers some spare players to avoid defaults. See other details below.

Next steps, action required: What are your thoughts??

Send an email TODAY to Jeff zn.gro.ogatonotnimdabnull@reciffo-ved answering the following three:

  1. Are you keen to play? If no, why not?
  2. If yes, what day would suit you (Wednesday or weekend, name time … see below)?
  3. Any other ideas or comments.

Replies are required asap – TODAY!

Details:

  • The teams and players would be selected by Roger, Andy and Jeff.
  • This event gives you a regular hard night of match play. Participation in this will help towards your selection in the Division 3 representative teams and your results at the Otago Open on the 11th/ 12th of May. The first representative fixtures in Timaru are the 26th of May.
  • Those who have a bye can participate in the Thursday night double competition, which is strongly encouraged.
  • The Wednesday night isn’t booked up yet, but a weekend may be better suited to the majority. The weekends may become disjointed when tournaments and rep events start. Tell us your preference.
  • Cost: Budgeted to be similar to last year, $10 to $12 per night and payable upfront in a lump sum.
  • Commitment: We would do a draw for 5 weeks, 4 matches each team and then re-evaluate with your input. Once teams are sorted, you can ask for when you have the bye, this may be because of exams or other events.
  • Dates: If possible we would start next week and play on the following dates (Wednesdays): April 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23.

Reminder: entries closing this week

Please be reminded of the following entry closing dates this week:

  • Tuesday 17th April – NZ Junior International – TODAY
  • Wednesday 18th April – Li-Ning North Island & North Harbour Open

Entries for the North and South Island under 17 and under 15 inter-association competitions, being held at Palmerston North and Invercargill respectively,
