Otago Senior Badminton: Plan for Year 2015 – Important Information

Hi everyone,

Here is some information regarding 2015 Otago senior (open age) badminton and the plan for this year. This includes info on training times, team selection, and tournament dates.

Player training Monday March 16 and March 23. 6.30-8pm. Anyone welcome to attend, $10 per player per night, cash to be paid on the night. Coaches and selectors for both senior teams are Jim and Leo.

Brooke Cup – Sat March 28, Invercargill, day trip. Friendly game against Southland 1. 4-5 woman and 4-5 men travel. We will organise who this is on March 23, volunteer/self-selection or lucky dip if a lot of people are interested, playing in this will not influence Otago rep selection.

Player training Monday April 13 and April 20 6.30-8pm. Anyone welcome to attend, $10 per night.

Week of April 20 – Otago 1 and Otago 2 rep teams selected.

April 27, May 4, June 8, 15, 29, July 6, 13, 6.30-8pm (7 training sessions). Only Otago 1 and Otago 2 rep teams can attend, FREE for these players.

If we make the NZ Div 3 final, then July 27, Aug 10, 17, 24, 6.30-8pm (4 training sessions). Only Otago 1, FREE for these players.

To be selected in the Otago 1 or Otago 2 rep team, you MUST be able to commit to the following events –

Saturday May 9th, Div 3 south island teams event, day event (either in Invercargill or Dunedin).

Saturday July 18th, Div 3 south island teams event, likely in Christchurch, travel on Friday afternoon, stay Friday night in Christchurch. Players fund their own accommodation and share of car pool petrol. Likely to be around $40 for accom (shared motel unit), and petrol depends on driver and style (?!)

Only for Otago 1, Neill Cup, Christchurch, Sat Aug 2. Again travel on the Friday, pay for your own accom and petrol costs.

Only for Otago 1, div 3 final if win the south island competition, Sat Aug 29, if we’re in it will be played in Dunedin (yay!)

Once selected in the squad you must attend all the Monday training sessions, unless otherwise agreed by the coaches.

You must play (or at least be on the reserve list for) an A grade interclub team. Dates still to be confirmed, it will only be held during University lecture/term time, and it will be on a Wednesday night starting 7pm. Last year this was a 6 week block May to mid June, and then a second block mid July to mid Aug. In the weeks that interclub is not on we may run another training session Wednesday night instead, this is tba.

To play for Otago you must be affiliated to the OBA through a club. If you need any information on this then please email me via zn.gro.ogatonotnimdabnull@reciffo-ved or have a look at the clubs on the OBA website.

During the year there will be opportunities to help with fundraising activities to cover/subsidise player travel costs.

Please email me via zn.gro.ogatonotnimdabnull@reciffo-ved if you intend on coming along to the Monday sessions in March, and pass this email on to others that may be interested in rep baddy this year.

Thanks,

Andrea Vernall

Junior Prizegiving Friday 17 October

It is getting to the end of the official Badminton season and time to recognise our achievements for the year. Our Junior Badminton end of year prize giving will be at the Angus Badminton Centre on Friday the 17th October from 6.00pm

Celebrating our success is very important, and I hope that as many of you as possible will take the time to come and be part of this night, even if you may feel you are not in contention for a badge or cup. It may not be your time now, but it could well be next time, so come along and give support and encouragement and have fun.

We will …
1. Reward our very young and potential future players who have participated in Friday Night Juniors and those who have earned their first Badminton Merit Badge.

2. Celebrate our Representative team achievements for the year & present Otago Team Rep Badges for those player who have represented Otago in either the South Island or National events.

3. Present the Otago Association Medal to any players who have won an Otago age group event for the first time this year.

4. Recognise the Otago players who have represented Mainland in the Australasian tournament in 2013/14.

5. Present the Cups for Outstanding Achievement in age groups U13 (girl & boy), U15, U17, U19 & Overall Winner

Supper will follow the presentation, with the Junior Committee providing drinks and a sausage sizzle. We would appreciate it if players can bring along a small plate to help with super – thanks.

Can those who won the cups last year please get them back to Ward, so that we can get them pre-engraved for this year. We need them by the 25th Sep – thanks.

Major Sponsorship for Junior Team

Cranserco Logo

We are pleased to announce that PT Berlian Cranserco have taken up the opportunity to be Otago Junior Badminton’s team sponsor for the 2014 year. This is fantastic news for our teams. This sponsorship will help keep costs per team as low as we can and provide the new playing shirts for this year. On behalf of the Junior Committee and all Otago Junior Badminton players, we would like to take this opportunity to thank PT Berlian Cranserco.

Our teams will all be named “Cranserco Otago” in the up-coming South Island U13, U15, U17 & U19 tournaments and also any Junior teams that are entered in a Nationals later this year.

PT Berlian Cranserco is the authorized distributor of Terex Mobil Cranes, Pathfinder Lighting Towers and Haulotte Elevated Work Platforms. They support these products with Parts, Service and Equipment Sales. Cranserco was established in November 2011 to address the Product Support needs for Terex Cranes in Indonesia.

They have very good business objectives which paraphrased below dovetails really well with our objectives for Badminton. Consider the objectives below with Badminton as our product:

  • A Reliable, Safe efficient product
  • Provide Training that achieves a high level of proficiency
  • Provide world class support with a focus on building relationships
  • Provide a range of innovative “value added” products (In our case tournaments and activities)

And the one objective that is not stated, but implied for any business or sport: “To be successful and continue to grow”.

We hope you will agree that the two entities share similar objectives and it is our hope that this relationship will be successful for both parties.

  • U15 & U17 Christchurch 13th to the 18th July

My sincere apologies to the U15 players who are now not selected. We did everything possible. If you wish, I can put your names forward to play for other provinces that are short, and you can also enter the U15 South Island Individuals on your own (Ward can help with this if you need it).

For the teams selected: Deposits and forms are due back now. So if you are named below and have yet to do so, can you please do this as soon as you can.

Update May 7:

We are still looking for players in the second U15 team (especially boys!). We have asked other provinces if they have spare players and will continue to look at players within Otago.

Should players not be available or pull out it will affect the viability of the team and may mean we have to reduce the teams going. We have until the end of this month (May) to make our final confirmation. After this we will face a hefty fine if we have to pull a team out.

I know there will be many questions. I have found that the best way to answer these is with a parents/players meeting and would like to invite you along on

  • Wednesday the 14th May at 5.30pm.

If you are one of our veterans, there is no need to come if you have no questions.

The names below are in no order of ability within the team. This will be assessed over this term and decided on close to the tournament by your coaches.

I look forward to seeing you all at the hall on the 14th!

Regards,
Ward
