Junior teams for South Islands named

Congratulations to everyone who was selected to represent Otago Badminton in the upcoming South Island Tournaments.

  • U13 & U19 Christchurch 5th & 6th July
  • U15 & U17 Christchurch 13th to the 18th July

We need confirmation from all players, so these teams are provisional until confirmed.

Update 23 May:

With a number of players unavailable, it has become impossible to enter two U15 teams. So the list below is now the teams and players named to attend the South Island Tournament this year.

My sincere apologies to the U15 players who are now not selected. We did everything possible. If you wish, I can put your names forward to play for other provinces that are short, and you can also enter the U15 South Island Individuals on your own (Ward can help with this if you need it).

For the teams selected: Deposits and forms are due back now. So if you are named below and have yet to do so, can you please do this as soon as you can.

Update May 7:

We are still looking for players in the second U15 team (especially boys!). We have asked other provinces if they have spare players and will continue to look at players within Otago.

Should players not be available or pull out it will affect the viability of the team and may mean we have to reduce the teams going. We have until the end of this month (May) to make our final confirmation. After this we will face a hefty fine if we have to pull a team out.

I know there will be many questions. I have found that the best way to answer these is with a parents/players meeting and would like to invite you along on

  • Wednesday the 14th May at 5.30pm.

If you are one of our veterans, there is no need to come if you have no questions.

The names below are in no order of ability within the team. This will be assessed over this term and decided on close to the tournament by your coaches.

I look forward to seeing you all at the hall on the 14th!

Regards,
Ward

Otago Handicap tournament – more details

Otago’s most successful tournament is back!

The early years

This tournament was once the most popular of all tournaments run in Otago. It was a full week long and the entries were so many, play often went home very late to get the games finished.

Its popularity is that with the handicap system, serious and more social players can compete evenly. There were 3 grades then, C, B & A, and players entered the grade closest to their skill level and then one above. The outcome is less easily predicted and with the canteen and lounge open there is a good opportunity to socialise. Which for the majority of us is as important and the game on court.

The Rules

What’s different?

Other than the points below…. All playing rules are as per the Badminton NZ Laws of badminton. Here’s a link if you want to refresh Badminton Laws.

All matches will be one game setting at 30, or must win by 2.

Handicaps

When both players have positive handicaps, or both have negative handicaps, the player with the lowest handicap will start on zero. For example: if player 1 has a handicap of 5 and player 2 has a handicap of 11, player 1 will start the match on zero. Player 2 starts on 6.

When the two opposing sides are positive vs. negative, play starts with those points. For example: If player 1 has a handicap of -5 & player 2 a handicap of +10,  play starts with player 1 on -5 and player 2 on +10.

Friendly vs. Southland on July 1: express your interest

Hi all,

The Junior Badminton Committee has been in contact with its Southland counter parts with the idea to arrange a regular (twice yearly) Friendly Match between our Juniors and theirs. The first to be in Southland. Then a return match in Otago later in the year.

The motivation behind arranging this friendly is to do two main things:

1. Give our Junior teams and top players a good workout before the South Islands and other individual tournaments and
2. Equally importantly, give our up and coming Junior players who were unlucky not to make a team this year an opportunity to get involved with the Otago team setup and get some good experience for next year.

How will it work.
Players will be put into teams, which will be graded on ability (not necessarily age). Selected U15 & U17 teams would be kept together were possible, depending on availability.

The emphasis is that teams will be playing against teams of as close to similar ability as practical. Southland will grade their players/teams along with Otago, and then these teams would play off against each other, i.e Southland team 1 Vs Otago team 1. Southland team 2 Vs Otago team 2, and so on.

The format would be similar to the successful Masters Cadbury Cup. Which is, that the winner on the day is the Provence who win the most games. (not tie’s)

It will be a very fun day, with a little rivalry mixed in. Specially between the more competitive players. Southland are a very hospitable Provence and will make our Juniors feel very welcome. They usually put on a very nice afternoon tea before the Masters head home, and I am sure they would do something similar for the Juniors.

Playing time.
Games would start on Sunday, July 1 around 11am and finish around 3pm~ish depending on player numbers.

Transport.
The Masters car pool down to Southland, but if we get enough interested players we will look at hiring a bus.

Cost.
This is yet to be discussed by the Junior committee, but if car pooling, it will be some petrol money. if we bus down, it will have to be more cost effective than cars. The Junior Committee will discuss if there are any other costs, but these will be minimal if any.

For this to be a success, Otago need to put as many players as possible on the court. To do this we need your support. The first task is to quickly put together a list of keen players so we can decide if we should hire a bus, and so we have time to work out the teams.

If you are interested in participating, can you please contact me as soon as possible. Final date for registering interest will be the 4th May.

If you have any questions, please contact me ether via email, or call me on 027 2770963.

Regards
Ward Kellett

Fundraising: what’s that?

Fundraising is a great way for sports team to pay for sports related costs and do some team building as part of the Badminton Family.

Fundraising money are used for:

  • Team travel incl. accommodation cost to competitions such as to Invercargill in July
  • Individual entries to any BNZ tournament
  • Box competitions run by the OBA. The first one starts Thu April 26 and is doubles and mixed doubles. Your participation in these is strongly encouraged to give you regular exposure to competitive games – see here for details. Entry close April 20.
  • Coaching and training sessions run by OBA approved coaches

Fundraising opportunities are harder to come by than they have been in the past! The Junior Committee have a tentative opportunity lined up with Southern Colour print in July/August. We hope you’ll join in – details to follow by email and on this webpage.

If you and your family become aware of any opportunities, please let Sonya or Vicki know zn.gro.ogatonotnimdabnull@sroinuj
