Otago’s most successful tournament is back!
The early years
This tournament was once the most popular of all tournaments run in Otago. It was a full week long and the entries were so many, play often went home very late to get the games finished.
Its popularity is that with the handicap system, serious and more social players can compete evenly. There were 3 grades then, C, B & A, and players entered the grade closest to their skill level and then one above. The outcome is less easily predicted and with the canteen and lounge open there is a good opportunity to socialise. Which for the majority of us is as important and the game on court.
The Rules
What’s different?
Other than the points below…. All playing rules are as per the Badminton NZ Laws of badminton. Here’s a link if you want to refresh Badminton Laws.
All matches will be one game setting at 30, or must win by 2.
Handicaps
When both players have positive handicaps, or both have negative handicaps, the player with the lowest handicap will start on zero. For example: if player 1 has a handicap of 5 and player 2 has a handicap of 11, player 1 will start the match on zero. Player 2 starts on 6.
When the two opposing sides are positive vs. negative, play starts with those points. For example: If player 1 has a handicap of -5 & player 2 a handicap of +10, play starts with player 1 on -5 and player 2 on +10.
