Otago Handicap tournament – more details

Otago’s most successful tournament is back!

The early years

This tournament was once the most popular of all tournaments run in Otago. It was a full week long and the entries were so many, play often went home very late to get the games finished.

Its popularity is that with the handicap system, serious and more social players can compete evenly. There were 3 grades then, C, B & A, and players entered the grade closest to their skill level and then one above. The outcome is less easily predicted and with the canteen and lounge open there is a good opportunity to socialise. Which for the majority of us is as important and the game on court.

The Rules

What’s different?

Other than the points below…. All playing rules are as per the Badminton NZ Laws of badminton. Here’s a link if you want to refresh Badminton Laws.

All matches will be one game setting at 30, or must win by 2.

Handicaps

When both players have positive handicaps, or both have negative handicaps, the player with the lowest handicap will start on zero. For example: if player 1 has a handicap of 5 and player 2 has a handicap of 11, player 1 will start the match on zero. Player 2 starts on 6.

When the two opposing sides are positive vs. negative, play starts with those points. For example: If player 1 has a handicap of -5 & player 2 a handicap of +10,  play starts with player 1 on -5 and player 2 on +10.

Tournament conditions

Information, Rules and Conditions of enter

  1. Entries must be received by 5pm Sunday the 23rd of November, so there is time to work out the handicaps and draw. Late entries will be at the discretion of the tournament manager

  2. Doubles will be played on Monday 2nd Dec, Mixed Doubles on the 4th Dec, Singles on the 5th Dec from 7pm sharp. (Note, there is no play on Tuesday the 3rd of Dec to allow for Summer Badminton)

  3. The draw and handicaps will be posted on the OBA web side on Friday 29th Nov.

  4. Any player wanting to challenge his/her handicap or of someone else must forward this with justification in writing to moc.liamgnull@ttellek.draw by Sunday 1st Dec 12 noon. Any challenge will be reviewed and if necessary an adjustment made before play starts on the 2nd Dec

  5. No challenge will be reviewed if forwarded late. All handicaps will stand as of the 2nd Dec. The tournament handicappers decision is final.

  6. As long as entry numbers permit the tournament will be a knock out with plate events. If numbers are not sufficient for this it will be a round robin. All players are guaranteed two matches per event entered.

  7. All games must be umpired. All players will are expected to umpire when called.

  8. Players not available when called for a game will be defaulted.

The tournament manager and handicapper reserve the ability to adjust any playing condition where entry numbers make them impractical or to aid the smooth running of the tournament.
